One of the things that I have noticed amongst my group of peers is that they tend to ebb and flow in terms of how much they are chasing their career dreams. This seems to be the process that many people go through in attempting to turn a dream job into their working reality:- Idealistic approach. This is usually when the daydreaming is big and the student is just starting out in school. For example, you dream of being a chef at a five-star restaurant and start looking at culinary arts programs in CA.
- Faced with realism. Hard lessons at the Culinary Academy of California teach you that you have to work long and hard to become a leading chef. A sense of defeat seeps in.
- Acceptance of mediocrity. Upon graduating, you get a job at a restaurant and work simply to pay the bills.
- The dream returns. After working for awhile, you start to see that there are other people who are making it and you remember that you want to make it too.
- Optimistic approach. Your old ideals are the same but they are tempered by reality. You optimistically start making career plans and start achieving your dreams.
Some people go up and down through those middle cycles many times and never get past them but it is definitely possible to turn your career dreams into a reality if you try.
