Caregiver Tips Include Take care of yourself too

When you start providing health care for someone at home, the challenges can be really profound and pronounced. The training materials available today are great, but even the best direct care worker training won’t fully give you an idea of what you are up against. Not only is the physical challenge of caring for a person a very real stumbling block, but there are some emotional and mental challenges, as well. When a person is old or sick, they need your help in bunches. By no fault of their own, some of these people just are not able to take care of themselves on any level. Home health care training has certainly picked up over the last few years, but can these courses really prep you for what is to come?

The answer is yes, on some levels. They will be able to give you an idea of what sort of medical needs the person in your care is going to need. They will show you how to handle certain difficult situations. What they don’t tell you is that you have to take care of yourself, as well. You have to be willing to put in the time and the effort for a little bit of self maintenance. Learning from some of the things mentioned in caregiver wellness DVDs is a good idea and it will be a boon to your situation. Just know that sleep deprivation is never a good thing and it helps no one.

Reading an Article About College Costs

Usually, I find myself skimming the newspaper, as there really isn’t that much news in there that I find interesting. Sure, I guess this is my point of view, but after watching the news at night, there really isn’t much that happens between that time and when the paper is published, so I feel I don’t miss a whole lot.

Today was a little different though. I found an article talking about how the students at our local college wanted them to decrease college tuition by five percent. They did have some good reasons for the need to have a decrease, with the most notable being that the students needed to decrease college costs somehow, or over the next year, nearly ten percent of the students would have to quit their studies due to financial hardship.

According to the study that the students had funded, the current college tuition costs were the highest in the country, and yet the college was ranked fifth – so the students felt that the prices were not justified.

It will be interesting to see how this situation turns out – I will have to keep my eyes open to see if the students get the cuts they are asking for.

A Second Career

My daughter Helen is a physical education teacher. She has been worried about getting laid off since so many schools have been cutting out their physical education programs. It doesn't make a lot of sense when there are so many overweight and obese kids these days.

Helen wasn't terribly interested in studying to teach other school subjects; she really wanted to keep doing something in her field. So when someone told her about a baseball franchise opportunity, she didn't waste any time checking it out. She and her husband Bert are big baseball fans, and the idea of making a living out of teaching and coaching kids in the sport and being involved in activities like Florida baseball camps was irresistible to them. After getting the details and discussing it at length, they've become convinced it's one of the best franchise opportunities around for them. Her in-laws have said they'd give them some financial support and I've been considering doing that too. Then this could become a family affair. I enjoy watching baseball too. Helen and Bert are looking forward to working together doing something they're both so enthusiastic about.
