A lot of people turn down going to college because they think college is boring, or they aren't interested in academic subjects. I also remember a friend of mine once telling me, "But I don't want to learn about all the other stuff — I only want to learn about the subject I'm going to school for!"
Luckily, there are many alternatives for modern students. If you want to do something a little different, consider a technical school. For instance, if you are good at cooking and are interested in earning your living as a chef, consider getting a culinary education. By this I don't mean taking a few cooking classes at your local recreation center or community college — I mean a real degree in the culinary arts.
This will open up a whole new realm of jobs to you. Gourmet chefs are paid well, but their employers usually expect them to have a degree from a respected culinary school. There are also many other jobs in the culinary industry — you can work as a chef or a cook in a range of types of restaurants, from fast food to the more fancy, expensive type.
Or, if you want to do something really different, consider getting your culinary arts degree — and using it for something other than cooking. For instance, you might plan menus for restaurants, or even work as a restaurant reviewer for your local paper.
This ought to demonstrate that even if you don't what to study traditional subjects in college, there are still opportunities for you in higher education!
